A new career

You lovelies are so wonderful! Thanks for your comments and support. I woke up to sunshine and that made me happy. I'm still feeling drained but I can slowly feel the creativity and energy trickle back in.

As I mentioned in my last post I'm doing a job hunt. It's so time consuming and applying can be such a hassle.

For awhile now I've been thinking about what I want my career to be. I've changed my mind over the years and I think it's due to my interests changing. Since year 10, when I was 15 I thought I wanted to be a Physical Education teacher, for high school. I went to an open day at the Queensland University of Technology and spoke to a guy who was in the Human Movement course. He pretty much convinced me and for the rest of my high school life I worked towards that goal.

Well that all changed when I wasn't able to get into the course I wanted. So I did a few other things such as Sports Development. I then went into Social Science at the University of Queensland. My goal was to go into Human Movements after doing a year of Social Science. So I was doing a fill in course and at a university that was not my first choice. The next year I was in Human Movements. Finally I thought I had reached my goal, but I didn't notice that over the years my love for that career had shifted and changed.

So basically I changed courses again and went into the Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sports Studies. I thought I would go into Sports Administration and work with sporting organisations such as Queensland Athletics (which used to be one of my passions). I really only did this degree because I was so frustrated with myself for changing my mind and I just had to have a degree to have something to show for all my years of studying.

So I graduated about 2 years ago and I'm still working in retail, at Myer. I don't mind it but I'm completely over working at a place that was only meant to be temporary. And I could not do retail for the rest of my life.

After much thinking, praying and talking I think what I'd like to be a librarian. I struggled with what I thought others would think, that it's a boring job, that it's nerdy. Stupid reasoning I know but now I've come to terms with that fact that I don't care if people think it's nerdy or boring or only old people are librarians.

And Jason thinks I would be good at it. He is very supportive. My goal at the moment is to work in a library, but I may have to volunteer first to get some experience. For me, I think I would like to work in a library, volunteer at my church and the children's hospital and to have a creative side business, most likely stationery. What do you think??

So we will see how this goes and I will keep you all updated to see how this all goes :)

  3. Gracie, does it give you the satisfaction? Will thinking of waking up to go to the library give you the satisfaction? If yes, then you should totally go for it. But never do anything which will make you settle for something less than you deserve.
And hey, you can always change the way librarians are perceived...in a totally sexy, non-geeky way!

  6. Hi Gracie, I work with a former librarian/library technician. She had a (google tells me...) Master of Information Technology (Library and Information Science). That's about a year & 1/2 full time at QUT, or 3 years part-time.

Of course, that's if you want to go down the career librarian path. I don't think there's any requirement for library assistant, but they are pretty popular jobs, therefore fairly competitive. I could pass on her deets if you want to know more about it.

  9. I too am with all of the above! You have to be happy Gracie with what you do each day and only you know in your heart what makes you happy.

Trying it out and doing some volunteer work first sounds like an absolutely fantastic idea. Get a feel for it and see what you think.

  13. Don't worry about what others think! A library would be a great place to work- just think of the books and information at your fingertips!

  15. I don't know why, but it feels (to me) like you'd be a good librarian, like...you have the qualities of a librarian. Don't ask why, but it just feels like you are one, even though I don't talk to you much.

Belated congrats on your wedding, btw! :)

  16. Darling Gracie, you have my support, one-hundred percent! I think being a librarian suits you perfectly, and you know that I've always admired your heart for God's ministry as well. I'm glad you're not letting that desire go. (: Also, a creative side business would be lovely, and I just know you'll be fantastic at it!

All my love to you. x

  17. A librarian! How lovely and what a job! I would love to be a librarian... haha if I could do a different job for each day of the week I would have five jobs!

I think it's great that you have a goal. All the very best for taking it to the next level!

  18. When I think of Librarians I think of the movie "You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I love that she was the owner (librarian of sorts) for her little book shop and that she would read to the children and opened up people's minds for the wonderfulness of books and reading. I think it's a great idea!

  19. I'm a librarian! It's a great job (and not at all old, boring or nerdy! You can take libray chic to a whole new level!).

I work as the teacher-librarian in an elementary school and it's just perfect for me. I love, love, love children's books. I get to buy them, read them, read them aloud, share them with reluctant readers, watch their world open up...

Follow your heart. It knows best where you belong. And if it's in the library, then so be it!
